Hey, I’m Sinéad.

I’m a Canadian travel writer and editor based in the Andean city of Cuenca, Ecuador.

I’m an avid hiker, I love a good travel memoir, I’ll take mountains over the beach and rugged outdoor spaces over polished indoor ones. I’ve been known to trek to rocky peaks at high altitudes above the clouds or celebrate Ecuadorian festivals with a full heart, but I’ve found my purpose writing travel stories for brands and publications worldwide. My writing mainly focuses on Ecuador and other parts of Latin America.

I have a degree in journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson University) and more than a decade of industry experience. My work has appeared in Adventure.com, Business Insider, The Daily Beast, The Toronto Star, Explore, Chatelaine, enRoute, Stylist, and others. I’m the current editor at Hostelling International Canada’s magazine. I’m also a copywriter having collaborated with adventure companies like G Adventures, Intrepid, and Cotopaxi. (Annnnd I create written content for clients in mental health or creative spaces. If you’re here for that, that’s right over here!)

I started out as an editor at Canadian Running magazine under Gripped Publishing where I covered the running scene—at home and internationally—and created content for brands like Lululemon, Reebok, Red Bull, and Saucony.

In early 2018, I left behind everything I knew in Canada and sought out a life abroad in South America. I lived in Medellín, Colombia for six months and fell in love with Latin American culture there. After that, I made my way to Cuenca, Ecuador—a quaint city flanked by mountains, with terracotta roofs, rushing rivers, and a celebration for everything. What was originally intended to be a one-year adventure has turned into six (and counting!). I’ve gotten lost in the jungle. I’ve swam with penguins. I’ve succumbed to altitude sickness. I’ve found meaning behind my favourite wildflower.

I’m grateful that Ecuadorian people have welcomed and hosted me in their incredible country for all this time. It hasn’t always been a neatly-packaged journey but it has been a transformative and worthwhile one. I aim to honour that authentically in my work. The editors I enjoy working with are those who are ethics-based, genuine, and open-minded.

When I’m not on deadline, I’m probably on a mountain covered in mud, running by the river next to my home, or just enjoying the sunshine on a patio. I always have a travel bucket list. I rarely have a firmly-planned itinerary.
